My Feelings About Ubuntu for Tablets
The Future of this Blog
I have decided that I would like to focus a lot more time into Wire Munch and my designing. Don't get me wrong, I love blogging still, and will be doing that with the majority of my time, just not to this blog directly. I am a graphic designer first and foremost, but also a blogger. I design and write at Wire Munch, and a little bit at SFI two days a week. this blog will not be going anywhere, just the experience will change.
What do I mean by "change"? What I mean is that the title, purpose, and audience will change. I am turning this site into more of a tech information hub. When I post, I will be sharing that post here, but just a preview like you have seen in my last posts. The title will be changed soon, but that is the main purpose. So don't leave, just get ready for some changes. The YouTube channel will not fall, though. I will be posting more on that come March. Stay tuned!

Nike's Relationship With Google
Nike recently announced that they will not be bringing native support for their Nike+ products to the Android platform. Why is this? It could be due to the already ready to go system support for Apple, or maybe it's due to the fact that Tim Cook is on Nike's board of directors! **conspiracy alert**.... Read More

Android: What's Your Flavor?
New Blogging Schedule/Announcments
Hey there everybody! I haven't posted in a few days as you can see. I was going through some things but it's all good now and I am back! While I was away, I planned out my new blogging schedule. No worries, I will still be posting every Monday-Thursday BUT a little bit differently.
As I said in a previous post, I am now designing for wiremunch.com, and along with that I am posting on their blog every once and a while. Also, I am writing for my buddy Curtis over at SFI. I will be doing that every Monday and Wednesday. I actually just posted a blog around 20 minutes ago about the many versions of Android. Check that out! Anyways, with me designing pretty frequently now I find myself strapped for time to write on both his blog and my own. That said, I will not be posting directly to this blog on those two days. I will be leaving a snippet of my post on SFI here with a 'read more' link at the end, which will in turn transfer you to the post on his blog. This helps both him and I.
So just a couple of announcements and changes, not to big of a deal. I'll still be writing and posting, just in a little bit of a different fashion. Stay tuned!

Gadgetech: Google Nexus 4 Back on the Market!
At long last! The Google Nexus 4 is back on the market! This phone started shipping last November, and was out of stock almost as quickly as it was made available. This great new device has been craved by many consumers since it's unfortunate disappearance.
According to Their Calculations...
Google's calculations on the initial sale of this device were WAY off, and not just by a little bit. MILLIONS of consumers are left without this phone because of their poor estimates. The blame for this was initially pointed at LG, who is the manufacturer of this device. Why would they be to blame, if they were just following orders?! Silly internet...
WOW! That's a Steep Ramp!
While LG was blamed for the shortage of the Nexus 4, they are also the only solution to the problem. LG has announced that they have, and will continue to ramp up production of the device to meet the demands of the consumer. Well isn't that just great! No sarcasm intended, that is some of the best news that I have heard in a while. One of those consumers is me, and I am eagerly awaiting my opportunity to get my hands on this product!
Hallo Aus Deutschland!
For anybody who didn't hurry to put that into Google Translate, that means "Hello from Germany!". Why is this placed in the middle of my post? Well, Germany is the only place that still had (emphasis on had) the Nexus 4 in stock! Germany still has the device in stock, but it is now available in both the US and Canada. For those of you looking to order this device, check out the links at the end of this post. There will be two links to the Google page to purchase the unlocked model from them (both 8gb and 16gb). In addition to this, there will also be a link to the T-Mobile website where you can purchase this device for a subsidized price with a new 2 yr. Agreement. I'm not sure if that applies to an upgrading two year agreement, you will have to look into that at checkout.
Thanks for reading, and stay tuned for availability updates for the Nexus 4!

$5 Designing!/ Indiegogo Computer Build & Giveaway!
Well, here is the announcement. I am officially making this post to kick off my $5 designing service! This is just a way for you guys, my audience, to get a quality design for a cheap price. So it's a great opportunity for you guys, a great way for me to become more experienced in the Photoshop environment, and just a good way for me to make a little bit of extra cash. There will be a gadget added to the left sidebar tomorrow so that you can contact me about this service.
Also coming this week is the dedicated blog page to display my work. Not to many actual posts on that blog, but lots and lots of logos, banners, headers, etc.! This site will directly coincide with this blog, my main posting source. So whenever you need a little reassurance before trusting in me, or just want to see some nice fresh design, check that out! ETA for that is Friday, Feb. 1 2013.
My first header with this service was completed earlier this evening, and was for Wire Munch. I will display that at the bottom of this post. The next will be done for Curtis Coburn over at SFI. Check out his blog HERE for great Linux news and more. Speaking of Linux, he has started an indiegogo project for a Linux build and giveaway! He is trying to raise $750 for this project in 60 days, so be sure to give even $5 to that project for a chance to win that build! Check that out HERE to see all the perks you can earn from funding this project. So that's about it, so stay tuned for much more!
Designing at Wire Munch
So back to the designing job. It is a start-up foundation, so there is no pay yet. From what I have heard, I will be working along side one other designer, who I have yet to find out about. I am very excited for this opportunity. Not only to get my name out there, but to assist somebody else in their venture to start up something great!

Nexus 7 Wallpaper
The size that worked for me was 1440x1280 and 144ppi. Worked like a charm. The image is also slightly tweaked from my last post. I fixed an uneven gap and aligned the edges better.

Gadgetech Kick-off: Nexus 7 Giveaway!
T-Mobile Gets the Nexus 7
I apologize that this post is behind schedule, but I was unable to blog yesterday. Many of you already know, but I wanted to share my thoughts on this. This post won't be to long, but it might be interesting. T-Mobile recently announced that they would be selling the Google Nexus 7 with a sim slot in it. This means a data connection 24/7, no matter where you are. I received a Nexus 7 not to long ago for Christmas, and I have fallen in love. As an avid user of this tablet, I personally think that it would be absolutely AMAZING to have a data connection everywhere that I go. Even with smartphones ( which I am getting a new one come February 14th) tablets just have an edge. Especially the Nexus 7 with it's 7 inch form factor. With this 'edge' that the tablets seem to have over the smartphones, and the accessibility factor that a 7 inch tablet has, this new option is great.
My thoughts on this are simple. It's a great way for T-Mobile to get new customers, and a great way to get their existing customers to stick around. Yes, I do have T-Mobile. This is definitely not my network of choice, but I don't have much choice until next month. Although with the Nexus 4 also being offered in a different way through T-Mobile, I may be renewing my contract just once more. Chances are that I will not though, and will be going to the unlocked way of life. It's cheaper, and it gives me freedom! I apologize for the tangent, but those are my thoughts. Simple, and straight to the point.

Two Reasons to Get an Unlocked Phone
In my opinion, unlocked phones are so much better than being tied down for two years. But there are two main reasons to this opinion. The first is simple. Money. With a two year contract from AT&T you are paying about $2500 for two years. With an unlocked phone, the cost for two years drops to $1800. Why is this? Well, AT&T plans are about $85/month for an unlimited plan. Yeah, I DID use plan twice in the same sentence because it's that important. When you make the wise decision to switch to an unlocked phone, with a $50/month plan, you are free.
This brings me to my next point. With an unlocked phone, you can pretty much switch phones whenever you want to. Yes, the cost of the phones is greater, but it is well worth it. You can get a phone of any kind. Got T-Mobile? Get an iPhone! (Or wait a few months until they are available) If your a tech reviewer, and want to test the service and 4G speeds of different phones, pop the Sim card in it, and give it a whirl.
Speaking of T-Mobile, they are removing phone subsidies from their market very very soon. This gives buyers the option to buy their phones out front and have a $50/month plan. OR, they can get their plans, and take a 'value' approach by paying a set price up front for the device, and pay small installments each month. This is a revolutionary idea to come from this phone company.
So to wrap things up, just get an unlocked phone. It saves money, and there are so many more options. Verizon's plans are outrageous, and two year contracts are inconvenient. Do the smart thing, and put a few bucks in your pocket and a smile on your face.

QuikBit #9: The Blog Schedule
I could've sworn that I posted this, but it was saved as a draft. I think I have come to an agreement with myself of a blog schedule. I've decided that on the weekends, there will be no huge posts. This time will be used to gather stories and information for the remaining 4 days of the week (Friday counts as a 'weekend' day). With that said, there will be an actual blog post Monday-Thursday. There will be QuikBits 7 days a week.

Pebble Smartwatch: First Glance
E-ink! Wait, E-paper... I always get confused by the two, but the Pebble Smartwatch sure makes the difference stick in my head! The Pebble has a rock solid chance of shooting to the top of the tech charts! See what I did there? This new device has made a huge impression on the tech community. With HUGE support by the tech community and watch enthusiasts everywhere, it was one of the most successful Kickstarter projects I have ever seen.
Simple Yet Elegant
The simplicity of this watch amazes me. The simple, yet very elegant design of this device makes for one sexy wrist watch. It's sleek body and comfortable wrist strap seem to be very attracting to the public. The simplicity of this product will also turn some tech enthusiasts away, from a UI standpoint. I have not had a hands on trial ( although very few people have ), but I have seen enough to make my initial statement about this UI. While it is a smartwatch, the interface is very simple. VERY simple. For some, this may be a turn off due to the inability to 'fool around' with different settings, etc. For me, and the many others like me, this is just another factor to love. With an easy to use interface, I will have very little to learn. I don't like learning curves much. So all this did was add to the craving I had for this small piece of hardware.
Features
There are a few standout initial features of the Pebble Smartwatch. The feature that students ( Such as myself ) will love is the ability to view your text messages and get a little bit of vibration action when you receive one. You can't reply to them, but you can sure see them on a brilliantly clear E-Paper display. This E-Paper reduces glare drastically, and just looks great to the eye. Another great feature is the ability to integrate incoming calls, email, and for us Android users, Google Voice. A few different faces to this watch are available for user enjoyment. Analog, digital, and even a text based clock face. To get the back light on this bad boy on, all you do is shake and bake it!.. Or just lightly shake it. Many small features will be available on this device, such as a pedometer and golf rangefinder. Just one more feature to this watch, and my personal favorite... You can sync your music with it! You still plug your headphones into your mobile device, but you can change the song, view what your listening to, play/pause, and perform all those necessary playback tasks. This could come in handy on runs, or even if your just to lazy to take your phone out of your pocket. A developer option is or will soon be available to create Bluetooth compatible applications and additional faces.
When can you pick these Pebbles up?
Well, the first model of this watch was unveiled at CES 2013. The company will be shipping this version to all the Kickstart backers starting on January 23rd. As for the rest of us, the exact release date is unknown thus far. It was originally set for September, but has changed since then. Although, I believe it is worth the wait. With a 7+ day battery life, and a USB rechargeable battery, I suggest that everybody should try this item out. For more information, photos, pre-orders, and to keep an eye out for the official release date visit getpebble.com .

QuikBit #5: Swamped
No actual blog post today. Just a quick...QuikBit. I was so swamped today, it was just rough. I will try to post a substantial blog every day. Something that people might actually care about. Maybe I'll do a Sony Xperia Z first glance post tomorrow. We'll see. I will be doing a ton of these 'QuikBits' if you haven't caught onto that already. Plan on an 'Exposed' video for a full explanation of that in the very near future. By that I mean Thursday.

Got Ubuntu? Got Windows?... GOT BOTH?? See my last post below! Or click here
Dual Booting: Ubuntows
Ubuntows: 1. The product of dual booting Windows and Ubuntu Linux on the same PC. (noun)
2. The act of dual booting Windows and Ubuntu Linux on the same PC. (verb)
What do you get when you dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu Linux? You get Ubuntows! (This is how I will refer to this from here on out).
Ubuntows makes for a great machine. The official name for this process is Windows Ubuntu Installer, or WUBI for short. But I prefer Ubuntows, it's catchier. I am an avid Windows user, but I have heard many good things about Ubuntu, so I decided to give it a try. The main reason for this was the announcement of the Ubuntu phones. I didn't want to be completely clueless when it came time to pick up one of these fine products. Anyways, I have had this operating system for less than a day, and I am already falling in love. Many people run Ubuntu as their only operating system, but I am not accustomed enough to it, nor do I want to give up Windows 7.
With an Ubuntows PC, I can easily switch between Windows 7 and Ubuntu simply by restarting my computer. The accessibility factor is one of the biggest 'turn-ons' of this option. Some of the applications that I have installed on Windows took 4-5 hours to download and I most definitely DO NOT want to go through that again. Yes, I know you can use the WINE process through the terminal in Ubuntu to gain access to some windows applications, but that is a lot of trouble when there is an alternate option available.
When I want to get a file over here to Ubuntu, all I need to do is restart my computer, plug in my USB, place the files I want to transfer onto that USB, and then just switch over to Ubuntu. If you were only running Ubuntu, this wouldn't be an issue. In my case though, I have my entire life on Windows. And I do mean my ENTIRE life. In deciding to go down the Ubuntows road, I saved myself an immense amount of time. No backup, and no restore or file conversion. Nothing. So moral of the story is: For anybody deciding to make the switch from Windows to Ubuntu, please (for your own sake), make the smart choice. Go Ubuntows. "I'm Jalen, and I approve this message." If you are anything like me, you are a little bit to lazy to sit and plan out your ENTIRE day... Admit it.
With this app, that is made easy!
